Tech Time with Mr. Hurd

The students in 2/3 M8 are very fortunate to have computers with Mr. Hurd twice a week. This week the students spent some time working on their typing school. After practicing typing, they had some time to work on a program called Tux Paint. Ask your child what Tux Paint is, I am sure they will have a lot to tell you. Enjoy the pictures of the students engaged on their computers:

A Visit From Firefighter Mike

Next week is Fire Safety week. Today we had a visit from a friend of mine who is a firefighter for the NYFD. Firefighter Mike came in to talk to the class about how to prevent fires in the house and what to do in case of an emergency. Many of the students knew to call 911 and to go out the fire escape if they can't go out the door. Firefighter Mike asked that each student go home and find out if they have a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector in their house. He then put on all of his equipment and showed the students what it is like to look for people in a fire. Finally he allowed the students a chance to try on his uniform and use the equipment. The students had a great time!

Washing Rocks

In science today we worked with Ms. Vanterpool to observe what happens to rocks when we put them in water. We have been studying 3 different rocks: scoria, tuff and basalt. The students were making excellent observations when they put the rocks in water, noticing that the rocks changed color, one of the rocks made bubbles, and the water changed color from the dust from the rocks. Enjoy the pictures:

Lamel carefully putting his rocks in the water.

Meiko and Emmanuel were amazed at the bubbles from the rock.

Juan was telling Ms. Vanterpool the great things he was noticing.

William paying close attention to the rock he just put in the water.

Yamilex and Christopher closely watching their rocks.

September Bulletin Boards

In science we learned about the many skills that go along with being a good scientist. We have started out study of rocks and have been working on being good observers while studying our rocks.
To start off our math unit for September, we discussed how we use math in our lives. The students wrote about 2 ways they use math and then drew pictures to go along with what they wrote.

In science we learned about the different skills we need to use to be a good scientist. As we started our unit on rocks, we have been learning to become good observers!
